If you take a copy of "The Gruffalo" (book) - in Arabic to use alongside your own English copy, your own children will have a wonderful way of interacting with the local children - this is particularly easy in Luxor (on the west bank). Take a football and signal your friendliness by letting them join in, and bring out the books later - there will usually be an older child around who can read the Arabic text to the younger children for you. Your own young children will get a really deep understanding of the importance and joy of language as they make friends in this way.
If your children already love the Gruffalo, encourage them to take a little responsibility for their own luggage with the wonderfully practical sit and ride Gruffalo luggage (as seen on Dragon's Den). You could pop a Gruffalo Water Bottle and a couple of lightweight Gruffalo travel games inside for real Gruffalo fans! (Note - some of the water bottle descriptions say it is stainless steel - but actually it is lightweight aluminium lightweight aluminium with a food-safe coating. The words in the design say "I'm going to have tea with a gruffalo.")
Practice your Arabic with The Gruffalo - in Arabic . . . although I'm not sure how many occasions the usual traveller would find to use the phrase "there's no such thing as a . . . " Or use it with Egyptian children, as described above.
"A gruffalo? What's a gruffalo?"
"The Gruffalo" is just the best childrens' book ever!! I love it!

Two games in one box, designed to allow both readers and non-readers to play together (2 to 4 players). The cards are beautifully illustrated, featuring all the characters from 'The Gruffalo' book. Fun to play, and helpful for reading, rhyming and colour matching skills.
No adult supervision and no reading is needed to have fun with the Gruffalo Felt Play Board - so you might just manage to get a nap during the flight . . .
The felt board (37 × 31cm) and 35 felt pieces are contained in their own travel bag.
The Gruffalo Pop-Up Play Pack has a Gruffalo Pop-up Scene has twelve A4 activity posters and 5 colouring pencils.
The Gruffalo Fun Pockets Activity Set has two travel-friendly playboards and 1 sheet of stickers
THE GRUFFALO PARTY PACK with Stencils, 90 Stickers, and more This pack was £4.99 (last time I looked) - which was great value. It includes a sticker activity book. The quanitiy of stickers would make this the Gruffalo sticker activity pack of choice - even if it wan't also packed with Gruffalo-themed party games, including the "Icky Sticky Gruffalo Guessing Game".
It would be easy to take only the Gruffalo stencils and colourful collage paper, and the 'Stick the Wart on the Gruffalo' game on holiday with you - they come in a re-useable bag.
As the activity book is a hardback (the paperback hasn't been released yet) and includes recipes and make-and-do activities, including invitations and thank you cards, Mouse masks, Owl and Snake decorations which you probably won't want to get into on holiday, you could just memorise some of the games ideas and leave the book at home.
The Gruffalo Activity Books are easy to carry - and there's plenty of choice:
Finger puppets are particularly easy to carry - and keep the children entertained!
These are well designed full bodied finger puppets (not just 'heads') and are elasticated so that they stay in place more easily.

This won the 2002 Spoken Book Award for Best Children’s Audio - narrated by Imelda Staunton
As well as the Gruffalo's very own song there are eight other action songs and story songs, all perfect for joining in with - including 'A Squash and a Squeeze' and 'Monkey Puzzle', as well as fun-filled action songs and energetic cumulative songs. They are sung by the author of The Gruffalo, Julia Donaldson (not technically superb, but energetically catchy). She sings with a live band, and there is also a Karaoke instrumental-only version at the end! Click the play button for the Funny Face chorus.
Each score includes piano accompaniment and guitar chords. A great fun singalong! Perhaps not for the plane, though - and if you are waiting at the airport you could easily find the sound of your CD attracts every family in the vicinity! (Take a few extra CDs to offer less well prepared parents perhaps!)
There are also various
other audio versions of THE GRUFFALO - including audio CD and audio cassette tape, alone or incombination with other products.
The Gruffalo's Child Audiobook
