My favourite flight search engines - plus package holiday offers / searches
Mainly because it's irritating to be confronted with a form which asks "when do you want to fly?" My answer is usually a despairing "I don't know! I want to fly when it's cheapest - that's what I'm here for!"
I want to specify '7 days either side' (at least!) - and to be offered flights from all my most accessible airports. Ideally I'd like suggestions for when to fly, and where to go (but only for destinations that appeal to me) to get the best possible value for money.
Happily, flight checking websites have started making it a whole lot easier to search for 'alternative dates' - and some - like - do much more . . !
The cheapflights.co.uk search engine is great - it seaches lots of different airlines and it allows you to enter 'flexible dates' as well as 'specific dates', and to specify your destination country rather than a specific destination airport if you wish. However, it fails to match skyscanner's efficiency because you need to specify a departure airport (which usually means making multiple searches to cover a single destination) - and the results are less current than skyscanner's. Some of the cheapflights results are with phone-only agents - you can't verify the prices online.
The Skyscanner 'Flight Checker' rounds up flight prices from lots of airlines - including many budget airlines, although EasyJet is not participating at the time of writing.
Skyscanner searches for all the cheapest flights:
That's right - you aren't limited to searching for one destination at a time!
Which is the cheapest destination to fly to in my time range?
Amazingly, Skyscanner is the only flight search engine I know of that will tell you where to fly to take advantage of the cheapest flights, within your limitations! A remarkable and incredibly valuable feature, don't you agree?
Tied to one specific destination?
Skyscanner's could help you:
The process of scheduling a multi-centre holiday becomes more cost effective with the quality and range of flight information is so easily accessible from skyscanner.
Can you believe it's free?? Amazing!
Long may the flight checkers continue!
You can also often search for flights from holiday companies with destinations in Egypt (see below). You might like to check on their holidays to Egypt and other holiday destinations - a great move.
Jet2Holidays now flying to Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt!
The 7 new routes from East Midlands Airport are Lanzarote, Crete, Corfu, Turkey, Cyprus, Tenerife and Sharm El Sheikh.
Now Jet2.com now flies from 7 northern UK airports - Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Newcastle, Blackpool, East Midlands, Belfast and Edinburgh and will open new routes in 2010.
Jet2.com now flies to over 40 destinations across Europe and North Africa. In 2010 it will be the largest scheduled carrier from Manchester Airport, selling over 1 million seats.
What's your accomodation style? Four star hotel? Backpacker hostel? Whatever the package offers you? Leave it to chance and see what turns up? Anything afloat? All of them, perhaps! Here are some starting points:
Hoardes of tour operators run Nile Cruises, city-breaks, 'sun-sea-and-sand' breaks to the Red Sea, Archaeological-interest trips to Luxor, Edfu, Aswan and the like, and various package holidays all over Egypt.
The main Red Sea resorts are Marsa Alam, Hurghada, El Gouna, Makadi Bay and El Quseir
Sharm el Sheikh has miles of beach, beautiful coral reefs and great facilities. Scuba Diving, snorkelling and other watersports are popular but you can also do horse or camel riding, desert safaris, ancient sites, shopping . . .
Sharm el Sheikh (Monarch)
Red Sea (Monarch)
Special 'themed' packages are worth tracking down - for instance;
Cairo, historic Alexandria and the poignant World War II sites of Egypt (Cosmos)
More environmentally conscious travellers may prefer land-based holidays rather than Nile Cruises. But you don't have to forego the Nile experience. In Luxor you can hire a Nile boat or a felucca for an hour or two, which allows you to cruise the Nile in much more romantic style!
You could also look for a holiday on a traditional dahabiyya (dahabiya)
- highly expensive but extremely atmospheric!
The Co-op's 'Very Cheap Holidays' is an online travel agency which - hopefully - does just what they say on the tin!
They aim to sell cheap holidays, all inclusive holidays, cheap accommodation and cheap transfers.
The holidays are fully financially protected as part of the Freedom Travel Group / Co-operative Travel Group.
There are a lot of opportunities in Egypt . . .
Useful 'Egypt Guide' and Regional Guides to Aswan, Cairo, Luxor, Red Sea and Sharm El Sheikh can be viewed on the Monarch website, with destination maps, reviews of holidays and accommodation, and videos.
The links above will search Monarch's cheap flights, and you can look at their 'two centre' holidays in Egypt and Nile cruise holidays, as well as other holidays, hotels & villas in Egypt.

Airport Parking for Air Travellers affected by Volcanic Ash
Airparks were proud of their customer service during the volcanic ash travel difficulties. Their 'volcano update' says that they allowed FREE overstays on parking 'during the volcano crisis' and that they brought in extra staff to cope with excess arrivals. Let's hope they keep it up if necessary.
