Best selling writer and Egyptologist Barbara Mertz goes by several names. Talent and hard work have earned her an M.A. and Ph.D. in Egyptology from the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago (1952), and several writing awards - she is a Grandmaster of The Mystery Writers of America and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Agatha Awards.

Barbara Mertz's writing career started with captivating factual works about life in ancient Egypt, both of which she has had the 'nightmarish job' of revising. "Temples, Tombs and Hieroglyphs" was revised in 2007 and the revised "Red Land, Black Land" was published in March 2008.

Turning to fiction was inevitable, given her lively, humourous style and her talent for storytelling. Her first mystery "The Master of Blacktower" - heralding many gothic suspense novels with an element of the supernatural - was published in 1966 under the pseudonym Barbara Michaels. It wasn't until 9 years later that she published "Crocodile on the Sandbank", the first title in her popular Amelia Peabody murder mystery series, using the pseudonym Elizabeth Peters (compiled from the names of her two children) which she had adopted a few years earlier for her first mystery/suspense novels. Each of these had signalled the start of a new series, the Vicky Bliss series and the Jacqueline Kirby series which went on the win an Agatha Award for mystery fiction with "Naked Once More".

A new Vicky Bliss mystery "The Laughter of Dead Kings" comes out in August 2008, and a new Amelia Peabody book contract follows.

The pseudonyms help readers distinguish between the different types of book, but Barbara says that she finds them "a horrible nuisance." Her official website combines the initals of all three: Mertz, Peters and Michaels.

Barbara Mertz now lives on a farm in rural Maryland. Her interest in horticulture enabled her to edit a new book "Community Gardening" for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden - due for publication in July 2008, see below. Her world is obviously a fascinating place!

Oh - and she loves to eat black walnuts!

The heist of the century in Egypt's Valley of the Kings leaves Vicki's on/off boyfriend, Sir John Smythe, looking like a prime suspect. Vicky isn't wholly convinced that he's no longer in the business of stealing antiquities and art objects. Pursued by Interpol, the Egyptian police, rival gangs of illicit antiquities thieves, and (worse of all) Vicky's inquisitive boss, the couple chase through across Europe and Egypt in search of the thieves and their booty.

COMMUNITY GARDENING (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guides) (2008)
by Ellen Kirby and Elizabeth Peters

There's no urban activity more "green" than community gardening - and this book shows exactly how you can create a community garden or improve an existing one. Wherever you live (this is an all-region guide) you'll benefit from horticultural tips for vegetable gardens, aesthetic and art gardens, children's and youth gardens, and others. Real-life case studies show neighbours producing safe, eco-friendly food, building neighbourly relationships, giving children valuable lessons in science lessons and experiencing the personal satisfaction of tending the land and making things grow. Like all Brooklyn Botanic Garden handbooks, the gardening practices recommended are both sustainable and organic .

The "Amelia Peabody" stories are fascinating, gripping and amusing best-selling murder mystery novels set in Egypt, usually around Luxor. You get a fantastic feel for the place as you read these novels. Location-wise, the exception is The Deeds of the Disturber, which is centres on the British Museum and involves a 'haunted' mummy case, supernatural curses, and a lunatic murderer.

Amelia herself has a quirky sense of humour and from the very first book, Crocodile on the Sandbank, subtly and amusingly expresses her deep love of the irascible, knowledgable and very physical Emerson.

Emerson himself - 'Father of Curses' to the Egyptians who often love him and fear him in equal measure - and the other characters who populate the books often reflect actual archaeologists ('contemporaries' of Howard Carter) who worked in Luxor in the Victorian era of Egyptology fever. The plots and characters are often intriguing, and always entertaining.

Elizabeth Peters is a genuine and respected egyptologist who happily also happens to be a spectacularly good novelist!

THE JACKAL'S HEAD: Complete & Unabridged by Elizabeth Peters

by Elizabeth Peters
Althea (Tommy) Thomlinson's holiday in Egypt leads to fearful discoveries both egyptological and personal. Is her father's death linked to a newly discovered tomb? This being an Elizabeth Peters book, the answer is surely 'yes' - but can Tommy excavate the solution from her own past? And can she do it in time to avert further disaster? There may be fewer of the comic moments we have come to expect in later books by this author, but the book is still filled with entertaining murder, mystery and romance.
