ANCIENT EGYPTIAN 'FOLK' PUZZLES

"MANCALA" NUMBER PUZZLE GAME

Mancala, carved,African made.Seed pieces Also known as 'Oware' or 'Wari', this is a number puzzle game for 2 players of any age. Mancala is probably the world's oldest game — ever! Two people can play - anywhere they can manage to scrape hollows in the eart or find a hollow object and find pebbles, seeds or other 'counters'. Because it's a game of strategy (not just chance) it has had a long lasting appeal. It started in ancient Egypt, but has spread across Africa - collecting many different names as it went - and on to the Caribbean, South America and Asia.

Mancala game, a book of instructions MANCALA PACK by Anthony Immanuvel

Learn how to play Mancala with the book and gameboard provided in the comprehensive "Mancala Pack". The game of Mancala started in Eqypt more than 3,000 years ago. Often constructed as a wood playing board with glass pieces, this classic count-and-capture game develops maths skills - and is very entertaining! It's a versatile game which can be played very simply by young children who have learned to count (with a little help), or as a challenge of strategy for adults. Variations of Mancala are found all over the world - the rules may difer, but the strategy remains the same. The interesting logic it requires helps develop maths skills.

The pack contains a Book and Gameboard - plus everything you need to learn and play (or even 'master') this classic Eqyptian count-and-capture game.

Special Mancala Game Sets:

Melissa & Doug Mancala

Some Mancala sets are beautifully decorative. The game board is sometimes made from wood or bamboo, and huge seeds may be used as playing pieces. The African Carved Wood Mancala Set with Seeds is particularly lovely.

The more Colourful Hand Painted Wood Mancala game (see right) (Melissa & Doug) looks good hung on the wall like a work of art! The colourful glass manacala 'stones' live in a sturdy antique-style pouch, tied with a leathery thong that attaches to the board.

Folding versions of Mancala make good travelling games.

JACOB'S LADDER LOGIC PUZZLE / TOY

The familiar Jacob's Ladder toy is a one of the most ancient and famous of folk toys. It's actually a logic puzzle - but that has never stopped anyone enjoying 'just messing aorund' with it! A version of the Jacob's Ladder game was found in King Tutenkhamen's tomb - so the toy has been around since before 1352 B.C.

TIC-TAC-TOE

Tic-Tac-Toe (like noughts and crosses) is another game dating back to Ancient Egyptian times.

A Beautiful Hand Painted Wood Tic-Tac-Toe Game is made by the Melissa & Doug - the same people who make the 'Hand Painted Wood Mancala game' (above). The style is simiilar - Tic-Tac-Toe also looks effective when hung on the wall like a picture. There's in a sturdy antique-style pouch, tied with a leathery thong that attaches to the board to store the playing pieces.
