Barbara Rosenblatt's recordings of the "Amelia Peabody" series by Elizabeth Peters are just wonderful!
Rosenblatt's inspired delivery of Amelia's tongue-in-cheek, self-mocking tone - and the 'confidential asides' about Emersons sex appeal - is perfect! The "Amelia Peabody" series of novels are available on audiotape and on CD.
Elizabeth Peters has also written various stand alone books, such as:
The Jackal's Head (MP3 Una Audio edition) illustrated here was released recently. The main character is Althea (Tommy) Thomlinson, whose holiday to Egypt turns into something else entirely.
Under a fiver, last time I looked at Amazon (RRP: £16.99).
The Griffin Aircurve 6261-AIRCRVC is a handy and cheap iphone amplifier.
No power needed to amplify anything you are listening to on your i-phone. Great for travellers (and anyone else)!
It is Egypt, 2000 BC - death gives meaning to life. The broken, twisted body of Nofret, concubine to a Ka-priest is found at the foot of a cliff. Young, beautiful and venomous - people are saying that Nofret deserved to die like a snake. But perhaps this death was just 'fate'. Renisenb fears a source of evil must lurk within household of her own father, the priest.
An acclaimed historical murder mystery - a novel of anger, jealousy, betrayal and murder - inspired by the expeditions Agatha Christie made to Egypt as the wife of an eminent archaeologist and written from her own experience plus exhaustive research.
OMA Format requires internet-enabled mobile phone (3G recommended)
the same recording is also available in alternative audio formats:

Lydia's return to nursing takes her to Saudi Arabia, through Egypt - Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Wadi Hafia - to India, and eventually back to Australia. As eccentric as ever, she blithely trots along, sunshade held aloft, while behind her ships sink, hotels explode and wars erupt.
Zahi Hawass, world-renowned archaeologist and official guardian of Egypt's egyptological treasures, has a very high profile and has had a hand in producing prolific materials for all kinds of media.
Barbara Mertz is the real name of the renowned egyptologist who also writes best-selling novels under the name Elizabeth Peters. Her books "Red Land, Black Land: Daily Life in Ancient Egypt" and "Temples, Tombs and Hieroglyphs: A Popular History of Ancient Egypt" were released as audio between 2007 and 2009.
Audio resources are great - they give you confidence to speak out loud, they make sure that native speakers will actually understand the words you are speaking - and you can use them when you're doing boring jobs or whilst you travel - even on your flight to Luxor!

Children benefit even more than adults from using audio resources. They make a great addition to 'reading aloud' by parent / teachers (we certainly hope they would never become a replacement). In particular, they help train a child to listen and pay attention when there is no visual focus like television or illustrated pages. And any parent who has traveled with children has already discovered the wonderful entertainment value of audiobooks / songs to help any journey speed by!
